Here's what 'Vito Claus' has in his sleigh for you this December:

Group classes that began in November will continue in December.

Because Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's all fall mid-week this year, we were looking at very short classes, just a couple to a few weeks in length each. The dancers felt that wasn't enough time to really practice and remember what we've learned so far. So instead (to everyone's relief), Vito decided to extend November's lineup throughout December. We'll continue to work on the dances you can see on the schedule posted here.

Please join us for our holiday party at Ballroom City on the 21st. Mark your calendar. This festive event is one you won't want to miss! I'll be there, playing a mix of holiday music and ballroom favorites. Delicious food will be served. Good times will be had by all!

Ballroom Dance Party - This Friday Night!

Vito will be teaching a Salsa pattern, starting at 7:30 pm.

The dance party starts at 8:00.

Group Dance Classes in November

It's going to be a great month to dance!

The November group class schedule has been released...

Thursday night beginner classes include two of the most popular dances; Foxtrot at 7:00 and Swing at 8:00. Vito teaches all his classes in a fun, relaxed and easygoing setting. You'll enjoy it --really :) No previous dance experience is necessary. In what feels like no time, Vito will teach you what you need to know to get out on that dance floor.

Come on out. You will be glad you did!

The Tuesday night classes that were recently added to the schedule are a hit! They're also back this month, by popular demand.

The intermediate (Level II) class at 7:00pm will cover Tango in November. Dancers' testimony about how Vito has helped their Tango is very impressive. I've talked to a few people who say that Vito gave them some important pointers that changed the way they dance Tango. You don't want to miss this one!

Level II class is for dancers who already know the basics and are ready to move on from there.

In the advanced (Level III+) class at 8:00, Vito will be covering Rumba this month. If you are an experienced dancer, chances are you know how rare an opportunity it is to take a group class at your level, with a truly professional instructor. There are very few classes like this one in the Chicagoland area. If you've ever patiently danced with newcomers just to get out and do what you love, do so no longer, my friend! Join this class instead. You'll be welcomed into a friendly group of people who have been dancing for years. You never know, you might even recognize a few of them. Just Dance -- in October!

Greetings, dancers...

October ballroom dance group classes start this week. We're thrilled to be dancing on the brand new floor at Georgetown. Here's what is on schedule for this month:

Tango and Cha Cha classes will be taking place on Thursday nights. No prior dance experience is required. You do not need a partner to join. Everyone is encouraged to come and check it out. You can sit and observe first, or join right in. It's up to you!

What you can expect? A friendly group of people. A relaxed and easygoing, yet professional and talented instructor. A great time!

Advanced class is back. Those of you who attended this class before, please note the date change. The class will now be held on Tuesday nights at 8:00 instead of Wednesday. I'm told the Tuesday night slot worked much better for the majority of the dancers, so Vito made the switch in order to accomodate the schedules of as many people as possible.

The advanced class is for dancers with prior experience.  During the month of October, we'll be learning Waltz patterns. Give Vito a call if you would like to join this group.

Intermediate Rumba is back by popular demand on Tuesday evenings at 7:00. If you know the Rumba basics already, this class is for you!

We're back at the Georgetown Clubhouse!

Join us for the Grand Re-opening Celebration Ballroom Dance Party

It is with great pleasure that I announce a dance date once again at the lovely and spacious Georgetown Clubhouse in Wood Dale.

The construction at the Georgetown Clubhouse is complete. We have a brand new, spacious and lovely dance floor.

Our kickoff dance will take place on Friday, September 27, 2013. Join us for a Cha Cha lesson at 7:30, followed by a dance party from 8:00-11:00 pm.

Thursday evening classes are back by popular demand. During the month of September, Vito will be teaching 3-count Hustle at 7:00 and Level I Rumba at 8:00.

Georgetown Clubhouse Construction Update

It has been a while since I've posted a construction update - so to recap first, the floor at the Georgetown Clubhouse, despite being relatively new, was torn out in February due to moisture problems.

Before a new floor could be installed, the moisture problems needed to be addressed so that the problem wouldn't re-occur. The GWIC board met regularly and asked engineers and consultants to attend their meetings as well. Meanwhile, the bare concrete floor sat, completely surrounded by thick plastic sheets to protect the rest of the Clubhouse from dust and dirt.

The dance classes have been held in the South Meeting Room for the past several months. While the room has been a comfortable temporary home for the group classes, we miss our beautiful Clubhouse! But most of all, we miss the ability to hold monthly dance parties - something the South Meeting Room is too small to accomodate.

Finally, some good news!

The group of professionals in charge of this project say they have determined the source of the issues. They made a plan and have gone to work. Floor installation is underway!

We haven't been given a firm date yet, but management estimates that we can resume monthly dance parties this September. We'll keep you posted.

It's been a long time, so in case you could use a reminder, the Just Dance ballroom dance parties are normally held on Friday nights. Depending on the Clubhouse's other bookings (weddings, etc.), the dance party takes place on either the third or fourth Saturday of the month. Tentatively, we're looking at September 27. We're optimistic that we'll be publishing announcements for that soon! Stay tuned...

UPDATE

August 22, 2013

Good progress this week!

The final waterproofing coats have been applied. The installers have now moved on to the next step - installing the sub-floor.

For dancers, this is a critical part of the process. It's the last time we'll see it. But not the last time we will know it is there. Our feet will thank us for dancing on this floor because of the thick, rubber coating that will provide the finished floor with a flexibility that will absorb shock that would normally occur in our own joints; knee, ankle, you name it. The sub-floor will also protect the flooring on top of it from moisture in the future. The product resembles this photo I found on the website of a flooring company:



As you can see in the photo below, the installers managed to lay approximately 20% of the sub-floor by the end of the day on Thursday.

August 28, 2013

The new floor is almost finished!!!



WOW! We walked in to quite a suprise yesteray afternoon. The Clubhouse looks fantastic!

There is a small amount still remaining to be done at the far end (you may be able to see the subfloor still exposed on either side of the fireplace). There are also unfinished areas at the edges of the stairs where you enter the floor (not pictured). The baseboards will need to be installed, then cleanup and then the removal of all that plastic sheeting is all that is left. The Clubhouse is starting to look great again... finally!

We will meet with management and see if we can get some dance dates on the calendar. More on that as soon as possible...

UPDATE

August 30, 2013

When we arrived for class, we found most of the plastic sheeting had been taken down. A GCIA member was walking around on the floor, inspecting it. So, we decided to give it a whirl!



We are really impressed. The thick rubber and plywood sub-floor pads this floor and makes it so comfortable! What can I say? Can't wait to dance on it!

West Coast Swing and Rumba - Back by Popular Demand!

Let's do more West Coast Swing and Rumba!!!

We've had so much fun learning the basics of both these dances the past four weeks. The problem is, we're just getting into it and hate to see it end so soon. So, the group has spoken and the fun continues! Starting Thursday, August 1, 2013 Vito will be beginning brand new sessions of these two fabulous dances. If you missed it first time around, consider this the perfect opportunity to join the class. Vito will review all the basics, then we'll move on to some stylish patterns.

Come for one class or both!



West Coast Swing (WCS) is currently one of the most popular dances to learn. You might even call it a dance craze! It is so appealing to dancers because it is incredibly versatile. At first, WCS had roots in Country music and a western or bluesy feel. It still does, but nowadays you'll see it danced to pop music, too. What used to be more of a fun novelty is now quickly becoming a mainstay at ballroom dance parties. This is a dance you'll be able to take with you nearly everywhere you go to dance - from a Western bar to a wedding to a nightclub. You'll be very glad you learned this relaxed, and laid-back dance!



Rumba, the loveliest and smoothest Latin dance, is also perhaps the easiest to learn. Vito is a Latin dance expert. You can read his impressive bio here. You'll be learning from a true professional! In class, Vito teaches basic but beautiful Rumba patterns. But what really sets him apart is that he takes the time to give simple styling tips that make you look great. Few instructors will give you so much bang for your buck!



A note to all you non-dancing "lurkers":

Considering starting but not sure dance is for you? Neither were any of us! If you've been thinking about joining the class but haven't done so yet, why don't you just stop by? You don't have to stay. You can just observe. I can tell you this. We're a regular group of people from the area, from all walks of life. Nothing intimidating here, no ballerinas, nobody taking it too seriously, just a friendly crowd. Dance is great exercise and it's a lot of fun. But mostly, we just come to have a great time! And we always do.

Classes take place at the Georgetown Clubhouse in Wood Dale.

Vito makes his popular monthly appearance as dance host/guest instructor at Ballroom City in Villa Park on Saturday, June 15. Come at 7:30 for the Bolero lesson, arrive at 8:00 for the dance party, or do both! Either way, admission is the same, a bargain at $10. This dance is always a great time. I'll be there, playing your ballroom favorites. 

If you'd like to mark your calendar in advance, Vito will return in July on Saturday the 21st, when he'll teach Swing followed by a dance party. I'll post more information on that when we get closer to the date. Meanwhile, click on the announcement below for the June dance date details.
 

Dance World Welcomes Vito Back in July

Terry McNulty, president of Dance World has confirmed that there has been a schedule change. This news is so fresh that I don't think the Dance World website even reflects the change yet. Vito has been invited to host July's dance. All the info is right here on this blog.

Ballroom Dancing in April 2013 with Vito Magrone

Ballroom Dancing at the Georgetown Clubhouse - and Around Town with Vito

We've been meeting weekly (on Thursday nights) in the South Meeting Room at our home studio, the Georgetown Clubhouse in Wood Dale, for West Coast Swing group class. The South Meeting Room is good-sized, and overall it has accomodated the class well. The workers are finished for the day by the time we get there at 7:00 pm, and the clubhouse is always left clean and quiet for our arrival. All things considered, it really says a lot about this group of people that this West Coast Swing class has been so much fun...

But we're still anxious to get back to the main ballroom and dance on a brand new floor! One of the interesting things about coming to the clubhouse each week has been taking a quick second or two to sneak a peek behind all that plastic sheeting to see how the new floor is coming along.

Last week, the concrete had been removed and workers were installing drain tiles and a new pump system to control moisture. This week, they were finished with that. They had poured a new, smooth layer of concrete and it looked dry.

We're told the next step is the floor itself!

Georgetown management has not yet made any future dates available for booking, so we're not certain we'll have a dance this month. I'll send out an announcement if they allow us to schedule one. If not, we'll resume our monthly ballroom dances in May for sure. I'll keep you posted.

We're Back! The Georgetown Clubhouse Monthly Dance Party

At long last, we anticipate the new floor will be finished at the Georgetown Clubhouse and we'll be able to resume our once-a-month Friday night dance. This top-quality dance, in wonderful surroundings with friendly dancers and Vito as the host, is one of the absolute best. We're glad to be back...

As soon as I have a confirmation that Clubhouse management has booked the date/time, I'll get the word out. I'll e-mail an announcement, update this blog, the website, Vito's Official Dance Facebook page, Twitter, you name it. So please check back sometime in a week or two. Ballroom City April Dance

Vito hosts a dance once a month at Ballroom City in Villa Park. April's dance features a Rumba lesson at 7:30pm, followed by open ballroom dancing from 8:00 on. Construction Update

Construction Continues
at the Georgetown Clubhouse

Hello, dancers!

Just a quick update. Construction continues on the new dance floor at the Georgetown Cluhouse. Once again, Georgetown management has cancelled all dates for our monthly dances in March. As you can see, the entire area has been sealed off as the crew continues to install the brand new dance floor.

We plan to resume our regular monthly dance schedule in April. You can check back here, or visit our website for the latest scheduling information.

in the meantime, group west coast swing class and private ballroom dance lessons continue in the South Meeting Room. For more information, contact Vito.

The not-so-good news: Next week, a crew will tear out the remainder of the floor at the Georgetown Clubhouse. We've continued to enjoy classes & lessons in the smaller South Meeting room at the Clubhouse. But next week, even that won't be possible due to construction.

We're investigating alternate group class locations for the week of March 3-9, and we will keep you posted.


The great news:
After that, it shouldn't be long before we have a brand new, deluxe floor!

The week of March 10-16 we are currently being told by Georgetown management that we will be able to return to the Clubhouse for group class. If there are any delays, we'll post them here, so be sure to check back before stopping by. For now, count on joining us that week for our regularly scheduled Georgetown events.

What's Up On The Ballroom Dance Scene?

It has been a busy weekend for ballroom dance!

The 2013 Indiana Challenge took place this weekend. Many dancers from the area were headed up to Schererville late last week to be a part of that event. Dance Camp Chicago also took place in Elmhust. Several of the studios also hosted ballroom dance parties. If you're still feeling the energy and excitement, and you're not quite ready to settle back in to the usual routine, why not plan some future dance events now?

If you missed dancing, that's an even better reason to get out and dance ♥ dance ♥ dance! It sounds like all this crazy snow, ice and rain is behind us now. Getting there shouldn't take much effort at all. And if you're like me, once you're there you'll be so glad you made it.

Advanced class is scheduled for 8:00 on Wednesday at the Georgetown Clubhouse. Class will meet in the South Conference Room due to the ongoing floor construction in the main ballroom. Due to the smaller room size, the class will be focusing on a Latin dance. Vito has gorgeous, silver level patterns that he teaches in his advanced class. He was undefeated champion for seven years in Latin when he was dancing professionally. You'll be learning from the absolute best! If you're interested, give Vito a call: 630-542-7644.

Level 2 West Coast Swing (WCS) group class takes place on Thursday evenings at 7:00. The class will continue through the month of March. Information is here. The only prerequisite for this class is that you know the WCS basic step. If you've ever had any WCS before, you should fit right in with this group. Vito will be teaching new patterns. Everyone in this class is exceptionally friendly and welcoming. There is always a lot of laughter. Both couples and singles are welcome. Stop by... you'll be glad you did!



Vito hosts a dance party once a month at Ballroom City in Villa Park. In March, he'll be there on Saturday, March 16. Vito will teach a Tango Lesson at 7:30 and open dancing will start at 8:00. The lesson is included in the admission price. Details are here.

Vito's own monthly dance party at the Georgetown Clubhouse is tentatively scheduled for March 22nd. Due to the floor reconstruction project, please check back prior to the event to make sure we'll be there. I will post updates as we get closer to the date. 

Vito is also available for private lessons. For those, I can offer a personal testimonial. I came to Vito as a student with some bad dancing habits. Vito patiently and tirelessly works with me to give me more poise and to eliminate some of the elements that shouldn't be there. He is incredibly knowledgeable, a real pro in every sense. Vito really makes it fun. But best of all, he is gradually taking a "hopeless case" like me and turning me into a dancer. Hahaha! It doesn't get any better than that!

Important Information: Event Cancellation & Updated Schedule

The good news: Georgetown Clubhouse in Wood Dale is getting a brand new, high-quality, deluxe, floating dance floor! The old floor was torn up and they began laying the new floor. I had the opportunity to see it yesterday. The underlayment is in place and they are ready to begin installing the wood. The project was originally going to take one week to complete.

The not-so-good news: Unfortunately, there has been some kind of construction delay. Georgetown management informs us they do not anticipate the floor will be finished until the end of February. They had to cancel our event date for the February dance at the end of the month.

*** There will be no dance on Friday, February 22 ***

The Georgetown Clubhouse is under construction. We will have a brand new, floating floor to dance on soon!

Thursday night West Coast Swing group class at the Georgetown Clubhouse is also still on! For now, until the time the main dance floor is finished, class will be held in the South Meeting Room. The class danced last night in that room and it worked out just fine. Use the regular (main) entrance and turn right. The South Meeting Room is down the hall. Last door on the right side. 

We will resume the monthly dance party - hopefully in March - on a brand new dance floor!

Vito will be teaching West Coast Swing on Thursday nights at the Georgetown Clubhouse. For those of you who are unfamiliar with West Coast, there are many styles of swing dancing. All of them are very popular.

 

Jitterbug and Single Swing are considered some of the original forms of the dance, and if you know some swing, chances are you are dancing one of those styles. East Coast Swing, often called "triple swing" is essentially the same thing, but with a triple step added.

 

West Coast Swing (sometimes referred to as WCS) has been around for a while - at least since the 1940s, when people danced the Lindy Hop. But dancers will tell you, West Coast has gained an almost unbelievable amount of popularity in recent years. It's one of the latest, hottest dance crazes!

 

Why is West Coast Swing the dance to know today?

 

Well, it's a bit different than the other swing styles. It is danceable to a very wide variety of songs. It lends itself to all kinds of popular music, and particularly well to blues and country. It is a slot dance that can be useful on a tight and crowded floor. But at the same time, if you do have the space to really perform, it can be made to look impressive without years of training and practice. It is stylish and sleek. Not to mention fun! Overall, West Coast Swing is a handy social dance to know.

 

Come join us for West Coast Swing on Thursday night. Vito will be starting with the basics, and then adding stylish patterns after we've all caught on. This class is guaranteed to be a good time!
